Tasman councillors are frustrated that ratepayers could be left to pick up the cost of another change in legislation after the government announced that district health boards will decide if water supplies are to be fluoridated. The government announced plans last week to take decision-making powers on fluoridating water supplies away from councils and hand them to district health boards. Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says New Zealand has high rates of preventable tooth decay and increasing access to fluoridated water would improve oral health. However, Tasman district mayor Richard Kempthorne and councillors last week unanimously criticised the decision saying it would be too costly for ratepayers. Councillors also questioned the effectiveness of fluoridation when sugary drinks and poor oral hygiene were

Those people aren’t drinking the water,” she says. Judene is also concerned that the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board won’t be able

to “carry out public consultation without bias because they are clearly in favour of fluoridation.” However, NMDHB principal dental officer Rob Beaglehole says there won’t be any immediate changes because “it is anticipated that a bill will be developed for initial consideration by Parliament by the end of 2016.” If the bill is passed before the end of the Parliamentary term in 2017, Rob says it’s “likely that legislation would come into force from mid-2018”. Rob says they will “continue to raise awareness about the risk of sugary drinks, and continue to lead by example by eliminating sweet drinks from our hospital cafes and vending machines” while the legislation is being passed.

Two apprentice building jobs now up for grabs

Andrew Board Builder Andrew Martin has begun the time-consuming task of reading each of the 88 applications to be his new apprentice. Last month, Andrew put out a call through the pages of Waimea Weekly for a new apprentice. Mitre 10 Mega decided to help him out and donated $400 worth of tools in a brand new tool belt and Subway Richmond has also donated a voucher so the apprentice doesn’t even have to worry about making his own lunch. Andrew says he’s been overwhelmed with the number of applications and the feedback he’s been getting. “There’s a few that probably stand out. Some have good practice skills and even some with some basic experience, so it’s looking really good.” He says he will begin calling people for final interviews later this week. But it won’t be just one apprentice hired. Another builder has contacted the Weekly, also wanting to hire an apprentice. Craig Weir says he’s looking to increase his small firm because of demand for new homes.

Poppy Day reunion for life-long friends Simon Bloomberg Richmond-Waimea RSA’s new president Ross Norgate was in very familiar company when he took his turn at the Poppy Day stall in the Richmond Mall on Saturday. Ross was joined by his close friends and RSA members Rick Williams and David D’Rose, who have all known each other for over 60 years. The trio went to Richmond Primary and Waimea College together, with Rick and David starting school on the same day, and all three served their country. “We all lived within a kilometre of each other and went to the same schools and we’ve been together ever since,” Rick says. “Ross was a few years younger than us but David and I were in the same class all the way through. Ross and Rick also later worked together for Ross’ father Harry who owned a cleaning business in Richmond. Although Rick says they never talked about joining the armed forces when they were students at Waimea College, that’s

where all three ended up. Rick joined the army straight out of school in 1965, aged 18, and had two years officer training at Sandhurst near London before completing his basic training at Waiouru “where I learned how to fire artillery.” He was posted to Vietnam for a year and subsequently served in Australia, Singapore, Syria, Israel and Egypt, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and commanding 161 Battery at Papakura. David joined the Royal New Zealand Navy on January 10, 1963 and trained as an electronics technician before being posted on the country’s “new, top of the line” frigate, the HMNZS Waikato. David was based in Belfast in Northern Ireland where the Waikato was being built before she was launched “from the slipway next to the one where the Titanic was launched”. Ross followed David into the navy in 1966, aged 16. He trained on the shore-based HMNZS Tamaki before being posted to the ageing frigate HMNZS Blackpool. He subsequently sailed on

Incredibly, all three of the former schoolmates met by chance in the UK soon after joining the services and had a night out together. “I was walking along in Ports-

mouth and I looked up and saw David walking towards me,” Ross recalls. “We knew Rick was also close by so went and looked him up - it was incredible being together on the other side of the world.” The three Richmond Primary and Waimea College school

mates also saw a bit of each other when based in New Zealand, with Rick’s army base Fort Cautley being close to the navy’s shore-based HMNZS Tamaki in Auckland. Rick says Waimea College’s connection with the services extends beyond their close friendship with “at least eight of us from Waimea serving in Vietnam”, including four members of the college’s 1964 First XV, Rick, Ken Wells, John Peterson and the late Kevin Harford. And this Monday, Ross and Rick will be joining forces again at the Richmond Anzac Day parade and service at the War Memorial Gardens while David will be attending the service at Mapua. The Richmond ANZAC parade starts at 10.45am from Sundial Square while the service commences in the War Memorial Gardens at 11am. Services will also be held in Brightwater at 9am, Tapawera at 9.45am, Wakefield and Upper Moutere at 10am, Lake Rotoiti at 10.30am, Mapua at 10.45am and Murchison at 11am.

Drivers escape serious injury after head-on crash Simon Bloomberg

Steve says it was “unbelievable” that neither of the drivers suffered any serious injury in the accident which left both vehicles strewn on the side of the road and severely damaged. The section of the Coastal Highway was closed for a short time after the accident.

One person suffered moderate injuries after two cars collided head-on on the Coastal Highway on Monday at about 11am. Senior constable Steve Muirhead says one of the cars appeared to have crossed the centre line and collided head on with the other vehicle. The driver of the second car was uninjured in the accident.

Man arrested for indecent assault in Richmond A man has been charged with indecent assault after an alleged incident in the home of an elderly Richmond woman. Nelson Police arrested a 52-year-old man on Monday evening following a report of an indecent assault on a woman, who is believed to be in her 80s. The alleged assault happened about 11.30am on Monday after the man approached the woman at her home and asked for a glass of water, say police. He has been charged with indecent assault and was to appear in the Nelson District Court on Tuesday. Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Johnston says the man is believed to have been riding a bicycle around the Richmond and Appleby area and police are keen to hear from anyone else who may have been approached by the same man. Anyone who has concerns they would like to raise should call Nelson Police on 546 3840.

The shade sail that was stolen from the Great Taste Cycle Trail. New caves found: New subterranean passageways have been uncovered in New Zealand’s Kahurangi National Park. World-renowned caver Kieran McKay and his team uncovered the passages beneath Mt Owen during a quest to find one of the world’s longest cave .co.nz systems. This latest expedition follows the team’s discovery of New Zealand’s

deepest cave system under nearby Mt Arthur in 2014. Kieran says the new finds were “incredibly exciting”, and were an important development in the North Owen Caving Expedition’s search for links between the Blue Creek Spring system on Mount Owen’s northern side and the massive Bulmer Cavern to the south. The new BP Connect opened in Richmond early on Wednesday morning, signalling the completion of a three-month project to upgrade the Queen St service station. BP Connect Richmond now features a Wild Bean Cafe with free WiFi and newspapers and more pumps and wider lanes in the forecourt. The new BP Connect also has a car wash and will operate 24-hours a day, employing up to 20 staff. “We always aim to make the BP customer experience better than they can get anywhere else,” BP director of convenience retail and asset management Frank van Hattum says. “We invested here because we think the local community deserves the best.” The first customer, Ngapare Jay, drove into BP just seconds after it opened at 6am. BP comes to club’s rescue Simon Bloomberg

The Nelson Surf Life Saving Club has a new $30,000 inflatable rescue boat (IRB) after their story of a dramatic rescue during last February’s big storm was judged to be the winning entry in a nationwide competition run by BP. BP is a major sponsor of surf life saving in New Zealand and has been running the competition for the last three years to recognise the important role IRBs play in saving people’s lives. This year, the Nelson Surf Life Saving Club won the competition after their story of an IRB rescue on the Waimea River was voted the best entry by BP staff around the country. “We responded to a 111 call during the big February floods saying there were some people stranded in a car in the Waimea River,” Nelson Surf Life Saving Club president Marcus Gardner says. “We put our IRB into the floodwaters and had to cut our way through about four farm fences to battle our way up to the car. “The car was up on a little rise and the floodwaters were up to the wheels and getting higher so we decided we had to get there out of there in a hurry. We put

Photo: Simon Bloomberg. the three young adults and ninemonth-old baby into the boat, with the baby wrapped inside the mother’s lifejacket and took them back to safety.” Marcus says they found out their story won the competition about three weeks ago when he got “a call out of the blue” from BP and Surf Life Saving New Zealand.” “It was a bit of a shock. The whole set up costs around $30,000 so it’s a big expense for the club. “It’s a great prize. We do a lot with the IRBs not just at the beach but

also in floodwaters because they are so versatile and can be manhandled or airlifted into any situation. “To rescue those people we had to throw it over a barb-wire fence and up a stopbank. You can get them into places that you can’t get other boats.” Club captain Aaron Lyttle says the win was timely because they needed to replace two of their older IRBs. “We had discussed replacing the boats at the last committee meeting so it was good timing,” Aaron

says. “We had joked at the meeting that we had it sorted because we’d entered the competition and were going to win a boat and it turned out we did.” Aaron says the last pieces of equipment for the IRB, which came with a trailer, outboard motor, fuel bladder, two personal floatation devices and $100 worth of fuel, arrived in Nelson two weeks ago. It was displayed at the opening of the new BP Connect service station in Richmond last Tuesday.

“We just want to say a big thanks to BP,” Mark says. “They are a great sponsor of surf life saving.” BP’s director of convenience retail and asset management Frank van Hattum says BP has sponsored New Zealand Surf Life Saving since 1968 and is proud of their long-standing partnership. Frank says BP is involved in a variety of different sponsorships but none are more visible or rewarding as helping out the country’s IRB fleet. “We believe it’s one of the longest-standing commercial sponsorships in New Zealand,” Frank says. “It started from the Wahine disaster when the importance of rescue boats was fully recognised. “It’s one of the most feel-good sponsorships. It’s been something special - if we had a big costing cutting this would be one of the last things we’d give up. “You know that somewhere one of these boats is going to help save lives. They have a wonderful track record when you think they have never lost anyone between the flags.” Last summer over 1300 lives were saved with 60 per cent of these rescues involving the BP-sponsored IRBs.

Spooners Tunnel officially opened

Jessie Johnston Spooners Tunnel is officially part of the Tasman Great Taste Cycle Trail after the ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on Sunday. Over 400 people attended the event which included addresses by Gillian Wratt, chairperson of Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust, Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne and Maureen Pugh, National Party List MP, before the tunnel was blessed by Archdeacon Andy Joseph. Once the ribbon was cut, 357 keen trail users of all ages rode or walked through the tunnel, heading back towards Belgrove. “I thought it was great, we were really pleased with the turn out and enthusiasm people had for the trail and the route through the tunnel,” says Gillian.

“We’re looking forward to being able to open the section from Waiiti to Belgrove later this year, and we’re hopeful of getting the trail through to Kohatu and Tapawera when we have funding to do so.” The overall cost to complete the Spooners Tunnel for inclusion into the cycle way, including the board walk entrance, was $97,000. Located at the bottom of the Spooners Range, the railway tunnel, which is over 120 years old, runs straight for around 1.35 kilometres, making it the longest disused railway tunnel in the country. Up until its incorporation into the Great Taste Trail, it has only been used for guided tours and monthly walks after it closed in 1955. Bike lights and torches are essential for those looking to make the trip through the tunnel.

Wakefield Apple Fair doubles in size It may have started small, but Wakefield’s Apple Fair has blossomed into a major community event in just three years. The first fair was organised by Sylvia Huxtable and the property owner Christine Greider, in order to make the most of the fruit presses and crushers owned by their friends. The second year saw the event receive a $2000 grant from Focus Wakefield, which wished to establish the annual fair and put Wakefield on the Nelson events calendar, as well as provide a fundraising opportunity for local community groups. “It was so successful last year that we’ve doubled in size this year,” says Apple Fair committee member Meredith Rimmer. As well as offering people the chance to bring along their apples for juicing, thanks to a number of hand-operated and mechanical presses, the Apple Fair also included over 40 craft and food stalls, musical entertainment and the chance to explore Willow Bank, the miniature historical village that accommodates the fair. For those who had no apples of their own to juice, two bins of free apples were donated by Hoddy’s Orchard, while another two bins of hail-damaged apples were picked by the fair committee. “We want this to be an annual event, it’s been so successful and we’ve seen so many people meeting and hugging and greeting each other, having not seen each other for ages. It’s just been a lovely community space, as well as a regular event,” says Meredith. Organisers say the number of people who attended isn’t known, although at least 500 vehicles were parked there during the day.

Pastel artists from around the country have their masterpieces on display in Mapua Hall for the PANZ National Art Awards and Convention. Pastel Artists of New Zealand (PANZ) holds the event annually, alternating between North and South Island venues, and this year Nelson is host to around 50 artists and over 100 paintings. This year the event is combining a public exhibition with the group’s national art awards, their annual general meeting, a convention

involving marketing and art critiquing, and two, two-day master classes with American pastel artist, Stan Sperlak. While all artists belonging to PANZ can take part in the different activities, only a select few had the chance to exhibit. Artists wishing to be part of the exhibition had the opportunity to submit three paintings for judging, with the selected paintings then sent to the venue to be hung, meaning those who come to view the artworks are admiring some of the best pastel pieces the country has to offer. Nelson is currently the biggest

group in the country with around 60 members “and on the opening night, three pictures were sold and they were all from the Nelson group,” says PANZ Nelson member, Sue England. While no local artists received first place or runner-up in the awards, Bill Burke, who was the overall winner at the 2012 event, took out one of the four merit awards. The exhibition, which started on Friday, will be running until May 1. Members of the public are welcome to come and explore the works of art daily between 9am and 4pm.

Mum gets a helping hand from Soroptimists Simon Bloomberg A grant from the Waimea Soroptimist Club is “making all the difference” for a young Nelson mum who is studying for a Bachelor of Nursing and raising three young boys. Kimberley Watt, 27, decided she wanted to become a nurse two years ago and enrolled in the Certificate in Foundation Nursing course at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology. She continued her studies last year when she started a Bachelor of Nursing and is now in her third year at NMIT although she concedes it hasn’t been easy returning to the classroom. “I left school at 15 and starting working full-time,” Kimberley says. “I’d been working ever since, in between having three children, before I decided I wanted to become a nurse. “I wanted to do something that helped people and helped them feel more comfortable when things weren’t going well for them. I’m really enjoying the course but

it’s been a struggle looking after my children and studying. “I’m on my own so it’s also been hard financially so the Soroptimists’ grant has been a big help. I’m honoured to receive it - the $2500 has made a big difference.” Waimea Soroptimists’ Jan McKenzie says they are delighted to be able to help Kimberley who is a “very worthy recipient” of this year’s education grant. It is the fourth time the group has awarded the $2500 grant which is aimed at helping mature women in Nelson-Tasman who return to their studies later in life. “We are thrilled to be able to assist in this way and, through various fundraising events, we hope to be able to continue this in future years,” Jan says. The club’s next fundraising event is a breakfast with Alison McAlpine at the Richmond New Life Church on May 21. SAVE THE CHILDREN: Margaret Hackston, Amy Hill, Nancy Cowan and Isabelle Jones of the Save the Children Fair committee, with some of the second-hand items to be sold on the day. The fair, which is being held this Saturday at the Stoke Memorial Hall, is an annual event and the biggest fundraising activity for the local group. The fair begins at 9am and will run until 12pm, selling everything including fresh vegetables from local growers, homemade cakes, jams and other produce, white elephant items, books, clothing, outside equipment, and plants from a local nursery. The fair is possible thanks to around 60 volunteers who help with the set-up and selling on the day, and this year the fair's proceeds will be going to two different causes. The first being in Bangladesh, working alongside local partners in the Daulatdia brothel to provide quality education for children there, while the second project, in the Philippines, works within schools to teach children how to prepare for and respond to disasters. Presidents Report Medals and It’s been a busy month for Club Waimea Dance Workshop with several functions, a quiz night, and also the Sioux Line Dance invitation weekend. Last week we also had to deal with a burst connection in the bar area, causing the club to be temporarily closed. I want to thank all those who assisted in the clean up, especially our chairman of the board, John Oakley, who used his experience in insurance, grabbing the insurance portfolio, arranging the contractors and minimising the time the club was closed. Top Richmond councillor calls time after nine years Simon Bloomberg

Richmond councillor Judene Edgar wants to see more diversity on the Tasman district council and is encouraging anyone who is prepared to work hard for their community to stand for council at this year’s elections. The popular Tasman district councillor last week announced that she will not be standing for council at this year’s elections to be held on October 8. Although she was the highest polling councillor at the last election, Judene says the time is right for her to step down. “It was, and it wasn’t, an easy decision but the time is right because of the age and stage my family is at and they have always been my priority,” Judene says. “I think it’s also important to give someone else a turn. I’ve been in council for nine years and it’s important for any organisation to have a degree of turnover and fresh ideas.” Although Judene says council generally does a good job, she considers that its lack of diversity means it isn’t fully representative of the community. Judene would like to see more women on council as well as more people with less conservative views. “It’s healthy for any council to be as representative as possible and we certainly lack that diversity. When you think about it, Golden Bay has

that diversity with Martine [Bouillir] and Paul [Sangster] but that’s not really the case in the other wards.” Judene wants to encourage women to stand for Judene Edgar. council and says she will be happy to talk to them about the job. It requires dedicated and hardworking local councillors that stay abreast of the issues.” She says one of the reasons she announced her decision last week was to give prospective candidates plenty of time to consider standing for council. The Great Taste Trail is also a significant one and it hasn’t been all plain sailing. It has an immense benefit to the community and will only get bigger and better as it’s completed.” In contrast, she says the Hope Domain blunder where council failed to consult residents about moving the Maitai Lodge and the controversial plan change for Richmond West were less than fond memories. Although Judene is not standing for council, she hasn’t made any decisions about her future employment. “There’s nothing on the horizon yet and I will be looking closer to the time. But I do want to do something that makes a contribution to people’s lives.” Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne says Judene is “very hard working councillor with a strong commitment to ratepayers across the whole district” and her departure will be a significant loss to council “She is a great person to have on council and has been a wonderful committee chair. It’s been really good working with her and we will all miss her.” Nominations for candidates open on July 15 with the election on October 8.

Kettlebell comp in Nelson Andrew Board The region’s top kettlebell competition is being held in Stoke this weekend. The Physical Culture Kettlebell Sport Open is now in its third year and is run by local kettlebell lifter Heath Bowman. Kettlebells are popular in many gyms as a cross-trainer, but the sport itself has a serious following. Heath says kettlebell sport “kind of mirrors” Olympic weight lifting. “So there is a snatch, a clean and jerk. Each event is a ten-minute set, you can’t put the bells down in that time and the goal is to do as many reps as you can in that ten minutes. So it’s very endurance focussed.” Heath says 11 locals will be joined by four or five lift-

ers from Auckland and one from Christchurch. “It’s not for everyone, but no sport is for everyone. It’s a very tough sport to do, it takes a lot of training by yourself and the battle is within yourself.” He says the sport has a good following in Nelson and it’s a sport that “tends to be very addictive”. “It’s physically tough but it’s the mental challenge that people love. When you’re standing there with two bells in your hands after seven minutes and you’re stuffed, thinking ‘I’ve still got three to go’. Jaine dominates six hour bike race Jacob Page Nelson’s Henry Jaine dominated the Kaiteriteri six-hour Mountainbike Race at the weekend. Event organiser David Ryder says he was so fast no team could keep up with him. Jaine completed 16 laps of

the challenging course in 5 hours 48 minutes and 54 seconds. He was faster than any team of riders and completed one more lap than his nearest solo rider rival. David says Jaine decided to ride alone this year after winning the team event with his father in 2015.

David says Jaine is an exceptional athlete but he was thrilled with the diversity of the 300-strong field that took the challenge. Susie Wood took out the solo women’s event by completing 13 laps in five hours 43 minutes and 39 seconds. She also completed one more lap than her nearest rival.

Waimea get early netball test Carol Cook

A youthful Waimea College netball team had a tough introduction to the netball season at the pre-season Geraldine Hodgson Tournament over the weekend. New coach in Julie Carter was focused more on structure than results. The team received a baptism of fire in A Grade as three of the eventual top four were in their pool. They were however, more competitive when they faced Marlborough Girls College although being defeated 23-16. Considering Marlborough are more experienced and have been together for some time coach Carter gave her players a pass mark. They will now look forward to meeting them in a school exchange in June.

There were positives throughout the weekend, with players adapting to several positional changes and displaying a better understanding of one another’s play. In their final game they faced Nelson College for Girls Senior and after a slow start, they found another gear and the attacks began to hum before coming up short 23-21. Defender Maddi Springer came in for praise as she worked to develop a combination with Andi Butler. There is plenty to work on with a major focus being to decrease the unforced errors, but the college team is young, talented and keen to work hard so give them a few games in the elite grade and they will come along in leaps and bounds. Defending champions Prices Pharmacy won the tournament.

Giants welcome closest rivals to Nelson Jacob Page

Nelson Giants coach Tim Fanning says the NBL’s playoff picture will be a lot clear after his team’s two games this week. The table topping Mike Pero Nelson Giants welcome the third placed Southland Sharks on Thursday night at the Trafalgar Centre, before an Anzac Day showdown with the Canterbury Rams who sit in second. The Giants are coming off a 111100 defeat at home to the Super City Rangers. “This weekend will make the playoff picture a lot clearer for everyone,” Tim says. “It’s a big weekend.” Giants captain Sam Dempster is still in doubt for both games after he was ruled out of the Rangers game due to injury. Fanning says his rebounding and physical presence was missed but he is confident he has the players to pick up the slack. “We have to get tougher on defence and get our share of rebounds,” Tim says. “Sam was a loss for us in that area but I know we have the players to cover when they are mentally in the zone.” Fanning says his team was eager to atone for their performance.

Waimea Old Boys div 2 come back to beat Stoke Jacob Page Waimea Old Boys division two overcame an early 15-0 deficit to beat Stoke 22-20 at Jubilee Park on Saturday. The home team eventually got the better of the forward battle and it helped them to score four tries in the process. Coach Wayne Bateman says he has mixed feelings about the performance. “We started slowly and Stoke re-

ally took it to us. “Eventually we got it going and, to be honest, we left a couple of tries out there,” Wayne says. “The margin could have been more.” Captain and No 8 Tim Fensom impressed and proved his versatility by switching to lock. The inside back duo of first five Kristian Hall-Smit and second five Francis Fatu impressed, with Hall-Smith relishing the extra game time in the lower grade

and Fatu proving an effective and powerful ball carrier. Wayne says the forwards eventually won the breakdown battle which helped earn them supremacy. He says this weekend’s bye has come at a good time for his players. “We’ve been hit by a few injuries so a rest will be good, and then we can start the completion proper and aim for a top four spot which I think is attainable.”

Waimea Old Boys coach Mark Milne was left rueing some missed opportunities in his side’s 27-23 Nelson Bays division one rugby defeat to rivals Stoke at Jubilee Park on Saturday. Star and Garter Waimea started slowly but had a strong middle of the game before mental lapses, and a last gasp try which was denied due to a forward pass, sealed their fate. Mark says a strong platform laid by the forwards at setpiece time and extra hunger at the breakdown got them back into the match after a slow start. “The result was frustrating; we started slowly but built into the game well in the middle stages and just didn’t take our opportunities like we should have.” Mark says it’s a sign of a young, inexperienced group trying to get used to playing with each other. The exit of a number of senior players and former players now with Super Rugby franchises, has ensured the club was going through a rebuilding year where Mark is more concerned with team culture and skill set improvements rather than results.

Mark says he was keen to ensure home ground advantage meant something to his team after back-to-back home defeats. “Even over the past few years we haven’t played that well at home and it’s a trend that has continued this season. “It’s something I need to figure out,” Mark says. Waimea second five Dylan Fletcher impressed with his dynamic play, especially with ball in hand and in contact. Mark says the effort and desire is there from the players and only time and consistency would yield the results on the field. “We are just having lapses,” he says. “The middle stages of the game were really good, then we would let it go.” Waimea Old Boys will travel over the hill to take on Marlborough heavyweights Moutere this weekend. Mark says the game will be another big test for his side. “We are a team that’s rebuilding, but there are positives there and we’re looking forward to testing ourselves again this weekend. “We are looking forward to the challenge of playing one of Marlborough’s best teams over there.” The game is scheduled to kick off at 3pm.
